How does exotic bird insurance work and protect me?

Having pets at home is quite common and in some homes when the owner can afford it, they may buy exotic animals and birds. These owners may keep exotic animals as pets, such as birds, for the sake of their enjoyment or for their children. Or they may be given the bird as a present. Animals and birds require extra care and will require treatment from the vet if the bird falls ill and on the other hand needs to be kept healthy and in good health. Paying vet fees and pet treatment can be expensive and will require a good financial budget.

However, on the hand, pet insurance is available to keep costs down to a minimum. A regular monthly pet plan will cover most of the medical needs for the exotic bird. What should be covered?

•    Medical treatment
•    Regular health checks
•    Special holiday care
•    Special transport
•    The vet’s bills
•    Theft
•    Travelling abroad treatments
•    Vaccinations

Talk to your vet on the suitability of any policy you may happen to be recommended by your insurance broker. Not all policies are the same. Ask the insurance broker about the excess and when payments will be made, whether you will have to pay first before the insurance company will pay out.

Adjust the excess to see if the premiums result in any additional savings.

Read the exotic bird insurance term and conditions carefully and store the documents in an easy to find place. Lastly, check that there are no problems with the type of animal or bird being insured and its age.
